Full professor of Semiotics and Health Communication, and director of the Institute of Communication and Health of the Department od Communication Sciences, University of Lugano.
Co-director of the Centre for Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Toronto and Lugano.
Director of the doctoral school Communication and Health, financed by the Pro*Doc program of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Holder of several fundings for projects promotoed by the Swiss National Science Foundation and other institutions (e.g. Kings Fund, UK, CancerBackup, and Health Promotion Switzerland) in the area of Health Communication.

Main Research Interests:
Doctor-patient communication, particularly the area of knowledge translation and risk communication.
Subjectivity and intersubjectvity from the point of view of semiotics.
Theories of communication in general.

Professional Membership and Service:
Holder of several seminars, courses and researches in many foreign universities (Boston College, University of Worcester, University of Memphis, State University of Novosibirsk, University of Riga).
Author of 5 books, editor of 3.
Member of the commissions of several research institutes, like the board of the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Centro Franscini and Swiss Virtual Campus.
Guest professor at Virginia Tech since 2003.
